Lanzarote is home to the Timanfaya National Park which boasts volcanic scenery and is at the heart of Wine growing country.
Timanfaya National Park is a breathtaking natural wonder located in the Southwest of Lanzarote. It is a unique landscape that combines a volcanic environment with an otherworldly appearance. This incredible park is a must-visit destination for anyone who loves nature, geology, and stunning landscapes.
The park was declared a protected area in 1974, and since then, it has been preserved and maintained to showcase the unique volcanic landscape of the island. It covers an area of approximately 51 square kilometers and is home to several impressive geological formations such as calderas, lava flows, and volcanic cones.
The park's most famous attraction is the Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains), a range of volcanic mountains that dominate the park's landscape.
The park's unique geology is a result of a series of eruptions that occurred in the 18th century, which covered a third of the island in volcanic ash and lava. The park's terrain is made up of solidified lava fields, volcanic rocks, and ash, which have created a striking black, red, and brown landscape that is unlike anything you have ever seen before.
Visitors to Timanfaya National Park can explore the park by taking a guided tour or by walking along one of the park's many hiking trails (walks need to be booked in advance - preferably book before you come to the island to ensure a place.). The guided tour is a must-do activity, as it allows visitors to experience the park's most impressive features, including the Geothermal Demonstrations, where water poured into boreholes returns to the surface as steam due to the intense heat of the earth's crust.
The park is also home to a visitor's center where visitors can learn more about the park's geology and history. Finally there is also a Cesar Manrique designed restaurant on-site that serve traditional Canarian cuisine, and visitors can enjoy a meal while taking in the park's stunning views. Here the chef uses the heat from the volcano to grill chicken and fish.
