...a nicely personal take on chic self-catering apartments, which they have refitted with appropriately mid-century modernist furnishings. Guests can order platters of local produce for breakfast, get surf lessons or guided trips with Richard or indulge in spa, massage and yoga treatments in a pleasing round stone hut on the edge of the vineyard.
This is the centre of the island's wine-growing region and as darkness falls I make out the vines peering out of black stone, surviving seemingly impossible odds to flourish in such an arid environment. Cacti and palm trees are dotted around Finca Malvasia's beautifully lit swimming pool, a blue oasis around which nestle four single-storey white-washed lodges. There is a cool breeze in the air and the hibiscus and geraniums sway gently.
Turreted chimneys, a curvaceous pool and cacti as tall as apple trees: it’s easy to see the influence of the great Lanzarotean artist and designer César Manrique in the design of this stylish self-catering guesthouse. Named after the wine of the region, it offers a choice of four apartments. Like Manrique's own creations, they're remote and beautifully in tune with the textured landscapes of rural Lanzarote.
Finca Malvasia. Follow a track through the lush vineyards to these apartments; they glow among the starkly beautiful volcanic landscape of La Geria. The low white buildings welcome you with their stylish and uplifting lines. A turquoise lagoon pool (toddlers have one too) sparkles amid palms and yuccas, an idylic spot for a sunset glass of wine.
